Old (Original, Short Line) Norfolk and Southern
"I want to model an engine, boxcar, and a caboose with the old original Norfolk Southern colors (ran from Va. Beach thru Raleigh o Charlotte, NC)."
A great site to start with is www.hosam.com. Also check out http://www.rr-fallenflags.org/. There are some "Short line" black and whites.
ENGINES: Atlas makes an HO scale GP-38 (DCC included), "Early" low nose in Gray with Black and Red trim. 150-9115 with "no number". They have made two other "numbered" units (#2001 and #2007) in the past. These are Atlas #9113 and 9114 respectively. These very well done units are what have started the renewed interest in this prototype. They are still available in some markets. I have a couple custom paint GE 70 ton (Grey as it was in 1973 http://www.rr-fallenflags.org/ns-s/ns-s703.jpg ). These were built on the Bachmann Spectrum two motor units. Bachmann is coming out with a single motor unit. A vermillion unit was also prototypical. See http://www.rr-fallenflags.org/ns-s/ns-s701s.jpg
BOXCARS: Athearn has made HO box cars, #1308, 50' DD box (grey/green with Black and Red NS) NS 1314 for some time now. No longer in the catalog. The grey is not consistent with the locomotive grey above. Several others are being made to be more consistent. Several custom painted versions are floating around.
CABOOSE: http://vandcs.freewebsitehosting.com/CabPix.htm . Can't really tell by the marks. Old NS painted over for new NS http://home.frognet.net/~mcfadden/wd8rif/trains.htm If you want a "true" picture, order "NZZ-021 Norfolk Southern #371 Caboose. Very faded red or brown. THIS IS THE ORIGINAL NORFOLK SOUTHERN. Cupola is in the middle." from http://home.comcast.net/~railimages/ . You could make one from Athearn #150-13091, change lettering, move cupola to center.
In N-Scale: ENGINES: Atlas again, 150-48914 is #2001, 150-48915 is #2007 and 150-48916 is un-numbered. BOXCARS: Atlas, 150-3600. Undecorated. Would have to paint and letter. CABOOSE: Atlas, 150-43081 or 43088 are nearest. Change lettering, move cupola.
Unfortunately there are no ready made and only a few undecorated alternatives in O or G scale. |
